TCM Rotation Day 3&5 (June 29 & July 1, 2011)

June 29, 2011 and July 1, 2011

We gained more understandings about TCM from Dr. Chen and Dr. Ho on the third and last days of our TCM rotation. From Dr. Chen, we received an introduction of the ten most commonly used acupuncture points and got the opportunity to perform acupuncture on our own. He also told us some rare and severe complication of acupuncture such as pneumothorax and kidney bleeding especially when long needles are used. From Dr. Ho, we got the opportunity to really touch some of his patients and felt the change in muscle tones or bone structure before and after his special Tui-Na. And we got to see how a patient who could not lift her arm to the level of shoulder can lift her arm after treatment. We also got to see a lot of stroke or cerebral palsy patients receiving acupuncture to facilitate recovery or relieve the symptoms. During this week of rotation in TCM department, I not only gained more understanding about TCM (especially acupuncture) but also got an idea about how to use TCM in weight loss. This experience gave me a more open mind toward using alternative medicine such as acupuncture in treating patients.
